Malin Ingrid Johansson started out as a still photographer before transitioning into directing music videos, art films, commercials, and short films. She was born and raised on a farm in the Swedish countryside, and might therefore be one of the few directors who know how to operate a tractor as well as a camera.

Two of Malin’s latest works include her short films Deck 5B/Däck 5B and Madden. The latter had its international premiere at the Berlinale in 2023 and was awarded the Best Swedish Short at the Göteborg International Film Festival (GIFF) 2023. Malin has also been shortlisted for the Young Director Award at Cannes in the category “Changing the World Frame by Frame”.

Malin and DoP Maximilian Pittner shot the short film Brynjar (2018) in Iceland with a handheld 16 mm camera and a documentary approach to the process. They were told stories about dead whales exploding and why a whole crew of sailors started using “snus” (oral tobacco).

With a keen eye for detail, Malin views the world in a raw yet sensitive way. With a loving eye for human beings, she holds a deep interest in human conditions and themes such as ambivalence, guilt, and the power of dreams. In her work, she leaves plenty of room for viewers to see themselves on the screen. If the story suddenly becomes about them, then Malin knows she has succeeded.
