MALIN INGRID JOHANSSON

MALIN INGRID JOHANSSON was born and raised on a farm in the Swedish countryside, Malin Ingrid might be one of few directors who knows how to operate a tractor as well as a camera.

Malin is currently in production with her third short film called ”Deck 5/Däck 5”, produced by Pine. She is also in development with a feature film, based on the short film "Madden".

Her short film “Madden” had its international premiere at the Berlinale 2023 and was awarded Best Swedish Short at Gothenburg International Film Festival (GIFF) 2023. Malin has also been shortlisted for the Young Director Award in Cannes in the category "Changing the world frame by frame". Her latest music video for José González premiered exclusively at Pitchfork.

Malin and DOP Maximilian Pittner shot the short film “Brynjar” (2018) in Iceland with a handheld 16mm camera and a documentary approach to the process. They were told stories about dead whales exploding and why a whole crew of sailors started taking “snus” (chewing tobacco) with mint flavor. Malin also stayed in the basement of the then Swedish ambassador Håkan Juholt, former Swedish Prime minister. She and Håkan communicated through handwritten notes left on the wall to wall carpet covered staircase, since they never managed to be at the house at the same time.

Malin started out as a still photographer before transitioning into directing music videos, art film, commercials and short films.

With a keen eye for detail, Malin looks at the world in a raw yet sensitive way. With a loving eye for the human being she holds a deep interest for the conditions and themes such as ambivalence, guilt and the power of dreams. In her work she leaves plenty of room for the viewer to see themselves on the screen. If suddenly, the story is about them, then Malin knows she has succeeded.
